Capability Statement (PDF)

Black Ice provides non-invasive environmental diagnostics for VA outpatient clinics (CBOCs) and VAMC facilities. Our approach is grounded in geophysical measurement principles, using calibrated, high-fidelity instruments to assess acoustic, thermal, airflow, vibration, and optical conditions inside patient and staff environments.

We design this service for clinic environments, micro-purchase procurement, and no operational disruption.

Our Mission

To give VA Engineering and Facilities teams clear, measurable data that helps improve:

  • Patient comfort

  • Staff working conditions

  • Noise and vibration sources

  • Thermal balance

  • Airflow performance

  • Lighting and visual environment

All without construction, IT involvement, or system downtime.

What Makes Black Ice Different

While many facilities rely on trial and error, Black Ice approaches comfort issues as geophysical problems:

  • Noise analyzed as acoustic waveforms

  • Drafts treated as fluid-flow anomalies

  • Hot/cold zones mapped as thermal gradients

  • LED flicker measured as frequency instability

  • Door and cabinet rattles identified as vibration signatures

  • HVAC imbalance evaluated as multi-domain flow variation

We use signal-domain tools, adapted from field geophysics, to deliver clear, quantifiable results that facility teams can act on immediately.

Environmental Comfort Assessment (ECA)

Black Ice conducts non-invasive environmental measurements using handheld geophysical-grade instruments to document acoustic, thermal, airflow, lighting, and vibration conditions inside VA clinic spaces. These assessments are observational only and do not involve compliance testing, engineering analysis, or system servicing. Each assessment uses a standardized instrument suite derived from industrial and geophysical practice:

Acoustic

  • ANSI Type 2 sound level meter

  • Surface microphone for impulse and rattle detection

Vibration and Impulse (Oscilloscope-Based)

  • Tektronix oscilloscope

  • Piezo vibration sensor

  • Frequency-domain analysis of doors, carts, and mechanical events

Lighting and Visual Environment

  • Lux and foot-candle meter

  • LED flicker photodiode sensor

Thermal and Infrared

  • FLIR thermal imaging camera

  • IR thermometer for vent and surface temperature differences

Airflow and Pressure

  • Digital anemometer

  • Optional differential pressure meter

How We Work

1. Walkthrough and Problem Definition
We meet with staff to identify comfort issues and operational constraints.

2. Instrumented Data Collection
We gather acoustic, thermal, airflow, vibration, and lighting data throughout priority rooms and corridors.

3. Analysis and Modeling
Using geophysical correlation techniques, we identify anomalies, validate them across measurement domains, determine root causes, and propose corrective actions.

4. Clear Written Report
We provide a concise, plain-language report with photos, measurements, and a targeted set of recommendations designed for Engineering, Facilities, or clinic leadership.

Who This Is For

  • VA clinics (VISN 16 and nationwide)

  • Medical offices and outpatient centers

  • Municipal buildings

  • Schools and universities

  • Corporate workplaces

  • Industrial and logistics environments

  • Any facility with comfort, noise, thermal, or airflow concerns

Our workflow is clinic-safe, quiet, non-invasive, and does not disrupt patient flow.

Black Ice provides non-invasive environmental comfort measurements using handheld instruments. We do not perform compliance testing, safety inspections, engineering analysis, HVAC servicing, electrical work, or medical equipment interaction. Our assessments are observational only, focused on acoustic, thermal, lighting, vibration, and airflow conditions to support your team’s operational decisions. There is no construction, no system access, and no disruption to patient care or facility operations.
